Payband/Salary Range: Band 7, $ 22.64 - $ 28.30
Reports to: Manager, Campus Services and Community Relations
Hours per week: 24 hours per week
Effective Date: As soon as possible to March 31, 2013


Duties & Responsibilities:

The Academic Coach works with learners in the College and Career Preparation Program to assess academic level, define goals, draft an individualized training plan, and conduct day-to-day coaching to positively impact retention.   Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Interviewing new learners in the program to gather information/data to facilitate setting short and long term goals;
  • Updating/maintaining information in databases and occasionally pulling reports;
  • Conducting general subject manner assessments and analyzing to determine academic levels of learners;
  • Coaching and advising learners on academic and self-management issues and referring them to community and government services for additional services and support, if required;
  • Working with learners to initiate and update individualized training plans;
  • Attending meetings and presentations for networking/relationship building opportunities to promote/market program services with community based organizations; and
  • Assisting with analyzing budgets, developing business plans and tracking expenditure activity within the program.


Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed a three year post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field (i.e. Career Counselling, Human Services, etc.)
  • Three years experience in one-to-one training or coaching in order to advise and prepare students.
  • Experience in marketing to promote program services.
  • Experience working with community agencies and knowledge of available services to make appropriate referrals.
  • Experience updating information and creating reports in a database (preferably a Ministry database such as the Case Management system [CaMS] or Information Management system [IMS]).
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Work, Excel, Outlook, etc.) to manage case files, create training plans, and liaise with stakeholders.
  • Interpersonal and communication (written & oral) skills to relay information to a diverse clientele with diplomacy and tact.
  • Time management and organizational skills in order to set priorities and handle multiple responsibilities within tight deadlines.
  • Mathematical skills to conduct and assess academic levels.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) guidelines and other Employment Ontario guidelines is an asset.
